Following the death of one of Mzansi’s top actor, Dumi Masilela , worrying details have now emerged showing the poor pay that some South African actors get.
Dumi , has been in the industry for years, died when he was shot in a botched hijacking .
Now an industry source working at the company that produces Rhythm City has revealed the measly salaries that the star got. Revealing exclusively to Times Live, the senior employee said Dumi Masilela earned R600 per shoot. Since he did not appear on the show everyday, Dumi earned about R1 800 per week which translates to R7800 on a good month.
“Some weeks he did not appear at all. The most he got paid was R9 800 in December 2016”, the source said and added , “if we compare Dumi’s experience to other American actors with the same experience, we will find that Dumi would be a millionaire right now. The industry needs a huge wake up call”
It’s understood Masilela, who played the character of ‘Sifiso Ngema’ on eTV’s popular soap opera Rhythm City, was travelling with a friend on Wednesday night when they were attacked.
Their car was shot at, wounding Masilela. He died in hospital on Thursday morning.
The police’s Kay Makhubele said: “They were approached by a black Jeep and when they realised that they were about to hijack them, they drove off. The suspects gave chase to their VW Golf and shot at it. We appeal to anyone with information to come forward so that we can trace and arrest these suspects.”
Masilela’s friend was not hurt.
